ACT / Academic Scholarships
Southwest Mississippi Community College awards ACT/ACADEMIC scholarships to qualifying students in the following categories for Fall and Spring semesters. ACT/ACADEMIC scholarships are awarded only for scores earned prior to enrolling in college courses (excluding dual enrollment courses).
Honors
- 21-24 ACT composite or superscore
- Must have a FAFSA application on file
- Must not have a college degree but must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must not have attended college more than three full-time semesters
- Must maintain 3.0 cumulative gpa
- Must maintain 12 + hours per semester
- Up to $750 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
Vice Presidential
- 25-28 ACT composite or superscore
- Must have a FAFSA on file
- Must not have a college degree but must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must not have attended college more than three full-time semesters
- Must maintain 3.0 cumulative gpa
- Must maintain 12 + hours per semester
- Up to $1500 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
Presidential
- 29-36 ACT composite or superscore
- Must have a FAFSA on file
- Must not have a college degree but must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must not have attended college more than three full-time semesters
- Must maintain 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Must maintain 12 + hours per semester
- Up to $2000 + housing and meals per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
Valedictorian
- Valedictorian of graduating class of accredited public or private institution
- Must have a FAFSA on file
- First-time entering student as a Freshman
- Must maintain 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Must maintain 12 + credit hours per semester
- Up to published tuition cost per semester
- Minimum award of $250 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
Salutatorian
- Salutatorian of graduating class of accredited public or private institution
- Must have a FAFSA application on file
- First-time entering student as a Freshman
- Must maintain 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Must maintain 12 + credit hours per semester
- Up to published tuition cost per semester
- Minimum award of $250 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
NOTE: Should an ACT/ACADEMIC scholarship exceed the actual cost of attending SMCC, the balance may be credited to the student’s account and they may be used in the college bookstore of applied to student fees.
Institutional Scholarships
SMCC offers scholarships for recent high school graduates who have earned achievements prior to enrolling in college courses (excluding dual enrollment courses.) Students who believe they are eligible for these scholarships are required to self-identify and provide proof of meeting the eligibility requirements.
Leadership
- Served as Student Body or Senior Class Officer – or
- Achieved Girl Scout Gold Award – or
- Achieved Eagle Scout Rank – and
- Legal resident of Mississippi
- First-time student, entering as a freshman
- Maintain 12 + hours per semester
- Maintain 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Up to $500 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters
Parish Residency Opportunity
- Current resident of West Feliciana, East Feliciana, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, or Washington Parish
- Within 2 years of high school graduation or equivalent
- 15 ACT
- 2.5 high school GPA
- Maintain 12 + hours per semester
- Maintain 2.0 cumulative GPA
- $500 per semester
- Awarded 4 consecutive Fall/Spring semesters

Performance Scholarships
Band, Music, Other
Performance scholarships are given to a select student body who is involved in small singing groups, chorus, band, and student publications. Please contact the director of the activity you plan to join or participate in to determine how you may apply for scholarships. If institutional scholarships exceed the actual cost of attending SMCC, the balance may be credited to the student’s account and may be used in the college bookstore, cafeteria, or applied to student fees.

Athletic Scholarships
Athletic scholarships are based on ability and need. Athletic scholarships are available for men’s baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s fast-pitch softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.
Qualifications
- To remain eligible, the student must complete full-time enrollment (minimum 12 earned credit hours) each semester.
- Applicants are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Maximum and minimum awards, as well as a minimum GPA, are subject to guidelines established by the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
The deadline for consideration is based on tryout date/signing date for each sport.

Note: All scholarship recipients in the above categories, in addition to SMCC Foundation, who are also Pell recipients, are subject to the annual maximum cost of attendance budget published in their individual shopping sheet. Students can locate the shopping sheet under their MySW account.
SMCC Foundation Scholarships
In order to qualify for a scholarship from the SMCC Foundation, Inc., the recipient must:
- Complete and return the SMCC Foundation’s scholarship application form along with ALL required attachments prior to March 15. No applications are accepted after that date, even if postmarked. Should March 15 fall on a weekend or holiday, the completed application and all attachments must be received by the Foundation Director prior to March 15.
- Attach personal letter of 500 words. (Include employment, goals, future plans, and explain in detail why you need this scholarship.)
- Have an overall GPA of 2.5 or above. Maintain an overall 2.5 GPA of above on all college coursework. Some Foundation scholarships require a 3.0 or higher GPA.
- Attach resume listing scholastic awards, extracurricular activities, current and past employment, and community service.
*Scholarships are awarded as funds are available.
Non-Institutional ‘Outside’ Scholarships & Programs
Southwest Mississippi Community College acknowledges and congratulates students whom receive outside scholarships (AmeriCorps, WIA, Church established scholarships, Career (parents’ job) scholarships, etc.). Outside scholarships must be reported to the financial aid office immediately. If a student receives an outside scholarship, payment should be directed to the Business Office to be applied to the student’s account.
